Learning Activities

1. Complete a table on the Characteristics of Learners by providing a description, influence on skill acquisition and effect on performance.

2. Using a table, outline how the characteristics of learners can impact recreational and elite athletes.

3. Practical application: juggle tennis balls or soccer ball on foot, spin a basketball on your finger, stacking cups. Describe the characteristics and skills the athlete would demonstrate at each stage of skill acquisition.

4. Using the information and videos provided at 8 Deadlift Progressions From Beginner To Advanced, create a flowchart of how the skill of a deadlift progresses from a beginner to advanced lifter.

Annotate each progression by highlighting which stage of acquisition it represents.

5. Using the provided case study, brainstorm the positive and negative characteristics that may influence Eelan and their ability to learn and perform.

Eelan is a talented netballer. She has played for the past five years and has just been selected for the representative team for her district. Eelan is in Year 12 and has just been voted in as the Vice Captain. Her aim with her schooling is to get the marks to make it into physiotherapy. Both her parents were enthusiastic sportspeople. Her dad still competes in local fun runs and her mum played club netball up until one year ago. Eelan participates in a number of other sports at school including soccer and cross country. She eats healthy food and gets on well with her younger siblings.

6. Complete a table on the characteristics of motor skills by providing a description of each characteristic and its influence on skill acquisition and performance.

7. Define each of the practice methods, provide advantages and disadvantages and then develop an example of which skill each would be best suited for.

8. Differentiate between the terms strategic and tactical. Then provide an example of both a strategy and a tactic used in a sport of your choice. This can be extended by identifying offensive and defensive strategies and tactics and discussing the differences and similarities.

Revision Questions

1. Outline the influence of prior experience on skill acquisition.

2. Explain the stages of learning with a specific sport as an example.

3. Describe practice methods at different stages of learning.

4. Analyse the relationship between characteristics of motor skills in a sport of your choice.

5. Assess practice methods for the different stages of learning.

6. Outline performance elements in movement skills.

7. Describe decision-making in movement skills.

8. Assess strategic and tactical development in movement skills.
