4. Analyse the case studies below and discuss how the determinants affect the young person's health.
Case Study One
Jono is a 16-year-old student living in a low-income neighbourhood with limited access to recreational facilities and healthy food options. His family struggles financially and they live in a crowded apartment complex with no nearby parks or safe outdoor spaces. Jono’s school lacks a comprehensive physical education program and he doesn't have access to extracurricular sports activities due to their cost.
As a result, Jono spends most of his free time indoors, engaging in sedentary activities and consuming unhealthy snacks. He has become overweight and experiences low energy levels.
Case Study Two
Allira is an 18-year-old high school student from an Indigenous community who faces a range of challenges impacting her mental health. In her community, access to mental health support services is limited and culturally safe resources tailored to Indigenous experiences are scarce. Allira also encounters instances of racism and discrimination, both within her community and beyond contributing to feelings of isolation and affecting her self-esteem. Additionally, her family has a history of mental health issues and there remains a need for greater mental health awareness and understanding within her community.
Case Study Three
Jedda is a 20-year-old Aboriginal young man living in an urban community. He actively engages in his cultural heritage and participates in community programs that promote Aboriginal traditions, language, and arts. Jedda has strong connections with his family and community elders, who provide mentorship and guidance. He works at the local YMCA helping train the youth in MMA and boxing. Jedda has access to culturally appropriate healthcare services and regular check-ups.
Case Study Four
Rana, a 13-year-old from a culturally diverse background, recently migrated to Australia with her family. Though fluent in English, her parents primarily speak their native language which affects how health information is shared and understood at home plus there is a lack of culturally sensitive resources and bilingual support available at school. Cultural beliefs around diet and health also differ from Australian norms, sometimes making it hard for her to navigate both environments. Her family’s traditional views on mental health make her hesitant to seek school-based counselling, even though she experiences severe stress.
