Learning Activities

1. Create a flow chart of the process of digestion. On the flowchart outline what happens at each step ingestion, propulsion, mechanical breakdown, digestion, absorption, defecation.

2. For an athlete of choice, research and develop nutritional considerations for a performance day.

Include suggested foods pre-performance, during performance and post-performance and justify why

linking the justification to the digestive system and the impact it has on movement efficiency.

3. Using the article ‘The Link Between the Endocrine System and Exercise’ outline how the following aspects of the endocrine system affects movement.

  • Pituitary Gland
  • Thyroid Gland
  • Adrenal Gland
  • Pancreas

4. Create an infographic of hormones and the relationship they have with movement and physical activity. Include the main function of the hormone, how it is released, why/when it is released and the effect it has on the human body.

5. Jo, a 35-year-old female CrossFit athlete has been experiencing symptoms of fatigue, irregular bowel movements and occasional mood swings over the past year. Jo has also experienced a drop in her energy levels while training. She decides to consult a nutritionist to investigate the underlying causes. Tests reveal slightly elevated blood sugar levels and indications of mild inflammation.

Upon discussing her diet, Jo reveals a typical daily intake:

Breakfast: Coffee with sugar, a bagel with cream cheese.

Lunch: Sandwich with processed meats, snacks and a soft drink.

Dinner: Pasta with creamy sauce and garlic bread or air fried chicken schnitzel and rice.

Snacks: Cookies or chocolate throughout the day.

Water: 1 litre water.

Explain how the individual’s diet could affect their digestive and endocrine systems and the impact this would have on their movement.

Revision Questions

1. Describe the role of nutrition in creating efficient movement.

2. Explain the process of energy metabolisation in terms of physical activity and movement.

3. Explain how stress could potentially hinder the efficiency of the endocrine system.

4. Outline how macronutrients and micronutrients can impact the efficiency of the digestive system.

5. Explain the interrelationship between the digestive system and movement.

6. Discuss how hormones can impact the efficiency of movement.
