Learning Activities
1. Choose one method of aerobic and anaerobic training.
Aerobic: continuous, Fartlek, aerobic interval, circuit.
Anaerobic: anaerobic interval, resistance training and plyometrics.
Discuss how each method contributes to specific fitness goals and sports performance
(e.g. endurance vs. strength/power sports) and analyse the advantages and potential drawbacks of each training approach.
2. Listed below are six sports that may be predominantly aerobic or anaerobic. Create a table and compare features that make training for each sport different. Think in terms of warm up, time, distance, resistance work, activity types, duration, intensity, sessions per week.
- Aerobic (triathlon, soccer, 1500m swim)
- Anaerobic (sprinting, gymnastics, discus throw)
3. Discuss how contemporary methods such as HITT and SIT combine aerobic and anaerobic elements to improve fitness and performance.
4. Find a YouTube video as an example of a traditional approach to resistance training
(e.g. Olympic lifting) and a contemporary approach (e.g. functional training).
Use specific examples from these videos to compare the similarities and differences between training types.
Revision Questions
1. Describe aerobic and anaerobic training for individuals and group sports.
2. Explain aerobic and anaerobic training for individuals in two sports of your choice.
3. Discuss contemporary methods of training.
4. Assess differentiated training programs and contemporary methods of training for individuals.
