  • What are the sociological causes of risky health behaviours?
  • Where do inequities exist and what can we do about them

NESA Glossary of Key Words:

Learning Activities

1. Choose ONE determinant and research information about how that determinant impacts the health of Australians. Create a visual aid to share your findings.

2. Analyse case studies of diverse individuals or population groups (people with disabilities, the aged, rural and remote communities, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, culturally and linguistically diverse communities) who have experienced health inequities in Australia and analyse the determinants of health that have contributed to this.

3. Choose a different population group in Australia. Research and argue why this group is disadvantaged in terms of risky health behaviours and deserves a larger allocation of government funds.

Present your arguments for and against.

4. Create an infographic that summarises the key information about population groups within Australia; include their inequalities and propose methods for how their health outcomes can be improved.

5. Chat to a public health professional or community health worker and speak about their experiences working to address health inequities in Australia.

6. Take a walk, bike, skate or scooter ride around the neighbourhood. Pay attention to the environment and the resources available.
Then at home note down your observations.

Consider factors like:

  • Access to healthy food options (grocery stores, farmers markets)
  • Availability of parks, green spaces, and recreational facilities
  • Presence of healthcare facilities and community centres
  • Overall sense of safety and cleanliness in the neighbourhood.

Revision Questions

1. Outline the five health determinants.

2. How do the broader features of society impact the health of Australians?

3. How do the health determinants interact to affect the health of different population groups?

4. Evaluate the impact of a chosen social determinant of health on an individual's access to healthcare.

5. Compare and contrast how the determinants of health impact TWO different population groups.

6. Explain how biomedical factors can impact an individual's health status.

7. Discuss the sociological causes of one risky health behaviour.

8. Discuss the role of socioeconomic factors in determining health status in Australia.
