Learning Activities

1. View the following clip The Importance of Fitness Testing and list three key points about Fitness Testing.

2. Participate in the Yoyo test as a class:

  • Set up two cones 20m apart (with a 5m recovery zone behind the start line).
  • Participants run back and forth between the cones, following the pace of the beeps.
  • After each shuttle, there is a 10-second active recovery where the athlete walks/jogs to the recovery zone and returns.
  • The speed gradually increases. When a participant fails to reach the line twice in a row,

 their test ends.

  • Record the level and number of shuttles completed.

Students answer the following questions on completion of the test:

  • How did you feel during the test?
  • What stage did you reach? Was this what you expected?
  • What does your result tell you about your current aerobic fitness level?

Discuss the following as a class:

  • What are some factors that could affect Yo-Yo Test performance (e.g. motivation, surface, sleep)?
  • How are results likely to vary for recreational and elite athletes?
  • How could the results from the Yoyo test be used to inform training for recreational and elite athletes?
