Explain - Relate cause and effect; make the relationships between things evident; provide why and/or how.

Learning Activities

1. Students design a 10-15 question pre-exercise electronic questionnaire in Google Forms covering:

  • Personal Details: Age, gender, contact information
  • Medical History: Heart conditions, high blood pressure, asthma, diabetes, past surgeries
  • Injury and Joint Health: Back pain, knee issues, previous injuries
  • Physical Activity Levels: Sedentary or active lifestyle
  • Symptoms and Warning Signs: Chest pain, dizziness, shortness of breath
  • Medication Use: Any medication that affects exercise ability
  • Lifestyle Factors: Smoking, alcohol consumption, stress levels
  • Fitness Goals: Weight loss, muscle gain, endurance improvement

2. Distribute the following scenarios randomly to students by giving them a number that corresponds with the scenario. Each describes a different fictional person with various lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise habits, family medical history and smoking/alcohol consumption. For example:

  • Eva, 17, exercises regularly but has a family history of breast cancer.
  • Lionel, 18, eats fast food often and has high blood pressure.
  • Aisha, 16, smokes occasionally and has a parent with type 2 diabetes.
  • Jeb, 17, plays sport but never goes for check-ups or dental visits.

Students pair up and administer their questionnaire to each other while wearing the hat of their fictional person.

  • Identify potential risks in their partner’s responses
  • Determine if their partner needs medical clearance before exercise
  • Suggest appropriate exercise modifications based on the responses
