Learning Activities

1. View the following video: What does the diet of an Olympic athlete look like? and complete a PMI chart.

2. Choose two contrasting sports, such as

  • Endurance sport (e.g. marathon running, triathlon, cycling)
  • Power/strength sport (e.g. weightlifting, sprinting)
  • Team sport (e.g. netball, rugby, soccer)
  • Aesthetic sport (e.g. gymnastics, diving)

Research and compare the dietary requirements of these two sports.

3. Imagine you are a performance nutritionist for an elite training centre. An athlete in each of your chosen sports has a key competition approaching. Create a brief nutrition plan (dot-pointed or timeline) for the athlete to use for the day of the event which includes:

  • Pre-event meal/snack
  • During competition (if needed)
  • Post-performance recovery
  • Hydration

Revision Questions

1. Describe the role of post-performance nutrition.

2. Explain why pre-event dietary requirements may vary amongst athletes.

3. Analyse the dietary and fluid intake requirements of athletes from two different sports.

4. Compare pre and post-performance dietary requirements for one sport.

5. Justify the need for monitoring hydration when competing in sporting events.
