How healthy are Australians?

Content Point Two

Analyse groups experiencing inequities in health, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and one other group (socioeconomically disadvantaged people, rural and remote, culturally and linguistically diverse populations, people with disability or older people)

Including:

  • what does the data tell us?
  • how do the determinants interact to affect the health of population groups?
  • what are some of the causes that underpin the inequities in health?
  • what actions can be implemented to improve the health status of these groups?

Example(s):

Causes that underpin the inequities in health:

Impacts of colonisation on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

NESA Glossary of Key Words:

Learning Activities

1. Complete the ‘Mapping Social Determinants of Health’ activity. Divide the students into small groups (3-4 students per group) and assign each group one area of health for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. (e.g. Type 2 Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease, Mental Health, Child Health and Development, Respiratory Illnesses, Kidney Disease, Substance Use). Groups research statistics and case studies related to their assigned area of health affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

 Mapping Exercise: After their research, each group will be tasked with marking their findings on a large map of Australia. Use stickers or markers to highlight areas where specific social determinants are most prevalent (e.g. areas with high unemployment, regions with inadequate healthcare access or remote areas with overcrowded housing). Add statistics and key facts near the map (e.g. life expectancy, child mortality rates, unemployment rates). Encourage groups to add solutions where available, such as community-led healthcare initiatives or educational programs designed to support Indigenous youth.

2. View the YouTube clip Fighting for Indigenous health equity – Janine Mohamed | AOTY | ABC Australia and list 5 key points about health inequities faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. Students could also watch Kev Rudd’s Apology speech for context and more information.

3. Students read the following article Practising culture on Country can improve Aboriginal people’s health and wellbeing and complete the PMI chart about how connection to culture and Country can improve the health status of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

Revision Questions

2. Analyse how the determinants interact to influence the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

3. Compare and contrast the health inequities experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and one other group.
