Learning Activities
1. View the following YouTube clip Healthy Cities Illawarra | Our Story and complete a ‘Caption This’ activity where they use images, stimulus or quotes from the learning and then write a caption underneath to explain/link to the content.
2. ‘SDG Investigation’ activity. Arrange the class into groups and set up several stations, each with a large sheet of paper or whiteboard. Each station will focus on one SDG (3, 4, 10 and 11). Using ABS data Search Census data | Australian Bureau of Statistics, identify the major health issues for your community (or another community of interest)? For example, poor air quality, lack of education, limited healthcare access or inequality in healthcare services. Students will move between stations (5-10 minutes per round).
At each station, they will:
- Discuss the current health status of the community.
- Brainstorm actions that could help achieve the SDG.
- Write down their ideas and suggestions for community initiatives that meet the goals of the SDG on the paper/whiteboard.
3. ‘Community health strategy’ activity. Divide class into small groups. Each group will design a strategy to improve the health of the chosen community. The strategy should include:
- Key actions related to SDG 3 (health), SDG 4 (education), SDG 10 (inequality) and SDG 11
- (sustainable cities).
- Key stakeholders (e.g. local government, healthcare providers, schools, community organisations).
- Expected outcomes (e.g. reduced disease incidence, improved education, more equitable access to services).
- Timeline and resources needed to implement the strategy.
