Learning Activities

1. View the following video "The IMPACT of TECHNOLOGY on SPORTS: a GAME-CHANGING REVOLUTION" and create a concept map to highlight examples of training innovations, equipment advances and methods for recording/monitoring training and performance.

2. Divide the class into three groups. Each will focus on one of the following categories:

  • training innovations (e.g. resistance bands, reaction lights, altitude chambers, force plates, virtual training simulations)
  • equipment advances (e.g. carbon-fibre running shoes, aerodynamic helmets, smart textiles, anti-gravity treadmills)
  • recording/monitoring training and performance (e.g. GPS trackers, heart rate monitors, smartwatches, video analysis, athlete management systems).

Groups undertake research to complete the following about their category;

  • Define their category and its purpose
  • Research 2–3 examples of that technology used in real sports
  • Explain how the technology works and how it helps improve performance
  • Identify any risks, ethical concerns or limitations
  • Apply the technology to a specific sport or training context

Groups will then present their findings visually (e.g. poster, slideshow, infographic) and share their table with the class (can use a live document so all students have access).

Revision Questions

1. Outline the role of technology in sport.

2. Describe examples of training innovations that have contributed to improved sport performance.

3. Explain the impact of equipment advances in sport.

4. Analyse how technology can be used to record and monitor training and performance.

5. Discuss the ethical considerations of using technology in sporting contexts.
