Learning Activities

1. Divide the class into two groups. One group will focus on an individual sport scenario and the other will focus on a group sport scenario:

  • Individual sport (Sprinting - 100m Athlete) - Amira is a 17 year old sprinter preparing for the regional athletics championships in three weeks. She recently returned from a mild hamstring strain and is slowly rebuilding her confidence out of the blocks. Her coach wants to design a training session that improves her acceleration phase and manages her load carefully to avoid re-injury. Amira prefers individual feedback and likes to set personal targets for each session.

  • Group sport (Netball) - The Senior Netball team is mid-way through their season and preparing for a weekend carnival involving multiple games in one day. The team has struggled with defensive communication and centre court turnovers. Several players are also carrying minor ankle or knee niggles from recent matches. The coach needs to plan a session that improves teamwork and strategy under pressure, while managing fatigue and ensuring all players warm up and cool down effectively.

2. With a partner in the same group, design an appropriate 60 minute training session for the scenario provided. The session must include:

  • health and safety considerations
  • overview/aim of the session (goal specific)
  • warm-up and cool-down
  • skill instruction and practice
  • conditioning
  • strategies and tactics
  • athlete reflection and/or coach evaluation

Revision Questions

1. Describe health and safety considerations when designing a training session for a group sport.

2. Explain how skill instruction may vary for an individual and group sport.

3. Analyse why session aims may vary for different athletes within a team.

4. Compare aspects that need to be considered when designing a training session for individual and group sports.

5. Justify the need for an athlete and coach reflection following an individual training session.
