Learning Activities

1. In small groups, students research a range of drugs typically used in sport and complete the following:

  • What the drug does
  • Why an athlete might use it
  • Short- and long-term health risks
  • Ethical and legal implications (e.g. WADA status)
  • A real-world example of an athlete who used it

2. Clean Sport Campaign’: In small groups, students create a campaign or resource targeted at young athletes to promote clean sport and discourage drug use. For example,

  • A slogan and logo
  • A social media post or short video script
  • A brochure or fact sheet
  • A school assembly speech

Campaigns should focus on:

  • Health implications of drug use
  • Healthy alternatives to drug use (e.g. training, recovery strategies, nutrition)
  • Ethical considerations
  • Positive role models and fair play

4. Scenario activity. Jordan is a 17-year-old national-level sprinter. Three days before the National Championships, Jordan tested positive for a banned stimulant. Jordan claims the substance was in an over-the-counter pre-workout supplement recommended by a teammate. They did not check the ingredients or consult their coach or doctor. No TUE was submitted. Jordan has never tested positive before. Groups discuss and decide the following;

  • Should Jordan receive a ban?
  • Does intent matter under WADA rules?
  • What is the responsibility of the athlete, coach or team?
  • Ban or no ban?
  • Length of ban (if any)?
  • Education or policy changes needed?

Revision Questions
