Learning Activities
1. View the following clip Australian athletes talk about supplements in sport and complete a PMI chart.
2. Provide students with 3 athlete profiles, such as:
- An endurance cyclist preparing for a 100km event
- A teenage weightlifter struggling to gain muscle
- A female distance runner with fatigue and low iron
For each:
- Recommend relevant supplements or micronutrients
- Justify how they support performance or recovery
- Identify risks or considerations (e.g. dosage, regulation, side effects)
3. Set up stations with summaries of current research (or use short printouts) on:
- Protein for muscle growth
- Creatine for strength/power
- Caffeine for endurance
- Iron for fatigue and oxygen transport
- Magnesium for muscle cramps
Students rotate in pairs and answer:
- What is the supplement?
- What’s the recommended dosage/use?
- What does evidence say about effectiveness?
- Is it more useful for individual or group sport? Why?
